SCOTLAND: Isle of Skye & The Highlands
October 4-9, 2020
This workshop will introduce you to some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes, from the scenic mountains, glens, and lochs of Glencoe to the rugged mountain ranges and dramatic coastline of Skye. Along with our local driver/guide (a resident of Skye and a talented photographer who knows the region the way only a local can), we’ll put you in the best spots at each location, and we’ll get you there in the best light available.
We plan to maximize our time on location, shooting as much as conditions permit. But we’ll also include in-the-field teaching and demonstrations, ongoing image reviews, as well as informal lessons and processing instruction when we’re not out shooting.
We invite you to join us on this photographic adventure and find out why Scotland is a favourite destination for landscape photographers.
If you have any questions about this workshop, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
A deposit of $1,500 is required to confirm your registration; the balance of $3,150 is due June 1, 2020.
Full payment is required for any registrations after this date.
Maximum of 10 participants (minimum of 5) to ensure you receive personalized attention throughout the workshop. Register early so you don’t miss out.
David Topping and Viktoria Haack
GENERAL INFORMATION & ITINERARY
Friday, October 2
Travel to Glasgow, Scotland (typically an evening departure from Canada or the U.S., arriving the next morning).
Saturday, October 3
Arrive in Glasgow and spend the day at your leisure adjusting to the new time zone or touring Glasgow City Centre. In the evening, we’ll gather for an informal dinner (optional) at the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport, which is where we recommend staying before and after the workshop (it’s conveniently located just across the road from the terminal).
Sunday, October 4 (Day 1)
We’ll meet in the lobby of the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport after breakfast and then make our way to Glencoe, stopping for lunch and possibly a photo shoot along the way. After checking in at our hotel, we’ll have time to rest before we head out for a sunset shoot. Locations on our agenda while we’re in Glencoe include Kilchurn Castle, Blackrock Cottage, Three Sisters, Glen Etive, and Rannoch Moor.
Accommodation: Bridge of Orchy Hotel
Monday, October 5 (Day 2)
Today, we have some options, depending on weather conditions. We may start the day with breakfast and an early departure as we head to Glenfinnan for the panoramic view of Loch Shiel and the viaduct made famous in Harry Potter films. We’ll then travel by ferry to Skye and end the day with a sunset shoot. Alternatively, we may head out for a sunrise shoot in Glencoe, followed by breakfast and more time photographing Glencoe before driving to Skye. If time permits, we may stop at Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland (if not, we’ll be back later in the week to photograph this iconic location).
Accommodation: Uig Hotel
Tuesday, October 6 and Wednesday, October 7 (Days 3-4)
Two full days on Skye will give us the opportunity to explore many iconic photo locations, such as the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr, Fairy Glen, Neist Point, Talisker Bay, Sligachan, Fairy Pools, and Elgol. We’ll also include some lesser-known locations that most people don’t get to experience. Our extended stay will also allow us the luxury of being spontaneous with our itinerary to ensure we’re at the best locations for the light and weather conditions each day.
Accommodation: Uig Hotel
Thursday, October 8 (Days 5)
We’ll start the day with a sunrise/morning shoot on Skye before making our way back to the Highlands (we’ll stop at Eilean Donan Castle if we we didn’t get there earlier in the week). After checking in to our historic castle hotel, we’ll explore the surrounding area, which includes Invergarry Castle ruins and the wreck of the Eala Bhan on Loch Oich.
Accommodation: Glengarry Castle Hotel
Friday, October 9 (Day 6)
Our final day together will allow us one more opportunity to photograph more of Invergarry and Glencoe before we drive back to Glasgow. We’ll arrive in Glasgow at the end of the day, where you’ll be dropped off at the Holiday Inn Airport Glasgow hotel.
Saturday, October 10
Depart Glasgow (typically an early morning flight to return to Canada and the U.S.) or continue on your travels if you decide to extend your stay beyond the workshop.
